The employee is very important to a business. And safety in the working environment plays an integral role in keeping the business like a well-oiled machine. One way to prevent any slip-ups in the business operation is to make sure that the employees are individuals with unquestionable characters. This is done through the pre-employment screening process where comprehensive background checks are conducted.

Pre-employment background checks are one of the top reasons why employers of an Ohio business feel a need to look through Ohio criminal records. This helps them form their judgment about a certain individual and deem whether or not he or she deserves to be hired. Employers are particularly concerned about this issue. A large part of this need for access to Ohio criminal records is due to negligent hiring lawsuits.

The employer has a responsibility to keep the safety of the working environment safe for his or he other employees by hiring people who have no propensity for a particular type of crime as outlined by their lack of Ohio criminal record. If however, the employee has an Ohio criminal record and then he commits a crime in the context of his job, then the employer would be held liable.

An Ohio criminal record describes any arrests and subsequent dispositions attributable to an individual. Ohio criminal records are stored in the State's databases for a variety of legitimate reasons. The first is to enable the States to immediately identify individuals with prior Ohio criminal records. Second is that, Ohio criminal records databases help them more effectively identify felons and others prohibited from firearm purchase. Ohio criminal records databases also help check backgrounds of persons responsible for child, elder, and disabled care. Ohio criminal records databases also identify individuals who have a history of domestic violence or stalking.

Aside from that, Ohio criminal records databases enable the States to make informed decisions relating to pretrial release and detention of offenders, prosecutions of career criminals and appropriate correctional confinement. And lastly, Ohio criminal records enable the States to conduct background checks to protect public safety and national security.

Ohio criminal records are maintained by the State of Ohio in its central repository. Ohio criminal records stored in the central repository are also forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to be stored in its criminal records database, called the NCIC. Aside from the database, the FBI also maintains the Interstate Identification Index (III). This is an "index-pointer" system to records of persons arrested for felonies or serious misdemeanors under State or Federal law. The FBI's index pointer system in turn helps facilitate the interstate exchange of criminal history records.
